in this story continue to pile up. rebekah brooks, one of rupert murdoch's most trusted executives, is under arrest tonight. her spokesman says that she turned herself in and she's cooperating. then late tonight a surprise announcement from scotland yard that sir paul stephenson, the chief of police for the organization now investigating this scandal, he has stepped down. london's police chief resigned under intense pressure after it emerged that scotland yard hired a former "news of the world" editor as a media consultant in 2009. the same year investigators decided not to further pursue the phone hacking case. the former editor, neil wallis, was arrested last week in connection with the scandal. >> i have heard suggestions that we must have suspected the alleged involvement of mr. wallis in phone hacking. let me say unequivocally that i did not and have no reason to do so. >> reporter: even with the head of police preparing to step down, scotland yard continues to make arrests. today it was rebekah brooks, former head of rupert murdoch's newspaper arm here in the uk, who resigned herself o

continues right no with brooke baldwin. >> hello to all of you, i'm brook baldwin. we are talking debt again today, keep in mind the clock is ticking down, another day closer to default. now six days and counting. here's the deal, at this hour, the house of representatives has nothing to vote on, no rescue package because john boehner oversold that plan he promised back on monday night. now as the rest of washington waits here, speaker boehner has spent the day trying to find more cuts to a program that he re -- the same congressional bean counters who check boehner's plan has now checked harry reed's. today those same bean counters are saying, yep, reed's numbers are wrong as well. but they also say that when it's all said and done, reed's deficit cutting trumps boehner's by, listen to this, more a trillion dollars. reed's plan, ten years, $2.2 trillion in net debt reduction. meantime boehner's plan $850 billion. again, six days until default. so what about the white house here? no debt meetings, not today, at least not publicly on the president's schedule. so let's go to washington, to jan

't you fill us in. >> reporter: we hopped off 270 off middle brook road and that was about six miles out of the scene. at that point, traffic was really starting to slow down. you mentioned moments ago, lesli, terrible timing. you don't want 270 ever shut down, let alone rush hour. so 270 was starting to back up and we're now traveling north on frederick road, starting to see a slowdown here as well. as you had mentioned, the evacuations are underway. everyone is safe as we're told so far, however, as we understand it, this gas main is a major concern for rescue crews in the area so they are clearing folks from their neighborhood and homes. we do understand that a construction crew severed that six-much gas main -- six-inch gas main. they are shutting down that road, clarksburg road east and westbound between 3:55 and -- 355 and wayland, route 207 at 120, also shut down. so it will be a commutedders heading home -- commuters. i guess the good news, police and fire crews are trying to get this under control. we're gonna continue to chug our way through -- cluck our way through traffic. >>
